Queen Etanna sat on her throne, quietly overseeing the event from afar. That wasn't quite the way she wanted it, but it would do for now.
The previous week, flyers had gone up all over town announcing a ball to be held in the castle, for anyone who should wish to attend. It wasn't just taxpayers, or royalty, it was everyone. Etanna had arranged everything; she wanted to get to know her people a little more.
The great table had been removed, and all decorations with it, leaving a bare room. A stage of sorts had been set up at one end for the musicians, and a smaller, buffet type table set up along one wall, groaning under the weight of all the food the chef could cook.
Finally, growing weary of sitting and overseeing, she stood and made her way to the staged area where the musicians were playing. Leaning over the leader, she whispered something. He grinned and waved, calling all the other musicians closer.
She left the stage and stood in the middle of the floor, watching as couples around her began dancing to the fast waltz that was now playing. She closed her eyes, threw back her head and laughed with joy to see her people having fun. It was almost like being at home.
She couldn't help it; she got so badly homesick every so often. Myron was a wonderful king, and a wonderful husband, but she missed her home. She sighed, her smile failing slightly, and one of the dukes asked her to dance. She placed her rather smaller hand in his larger one and curtseyed.

Dark blue eyes mixed with silvery green hues peered around the door into the grand ballroom. Gwendolyn had seen the flyers go up weeks before the event and knew it would be an excellent opportunity to meet the new queen. Her queen.
Her eyes turned towards Etanna. The fair queen was laughing, and she looked so happy, so alive that Gwen wanted to immediately rush over and join her in her infectious joy. Gwendolyn loved a great party, and so far it was looking like this would be the very thing that she would like. Of course, it was a public ball so there would be people of lower status but Gwen didn't mind. Being friends with Alryn had much enlightened her ideas of society now a days. I miss him, she thought sadly to herself, guilt tugging at her heartstrings. With a stroke of luck, he'll be here!
Gwen replaced her sad face with a bright glowing smile and strided through the doorway with confidence and precision. She was used to these social events and knew well how to hide her nerves and anxiety. This was a social event, and those were one of the things that she did best! Why not be confident?
The dress she had chosen was the lightest of pink, silk, and full. It was lined with lace as were the sleeves, and the fact that it hid her black leather shoes, made it look as if Gwen were gliding across a lake. It was highly flattering, and probably her best dress. Why not look her best for the queen and king of Casadile?
She approached the queen, preparing to introduce herself as the other citizen's did. When it was her turn, she chose a practiced flow of words. Good evening your Majesty! I am very pleased to be here at your event tonight! Gwendolyn smiled her special charming smile, her voice as silky and musical as it always was. She tossed her long bundle of chocolate brown curls over her shoulder and straightened her lace, pearl encrusted pinner cap. She needed to look her very best for this introduction.
